Henman said Clayton 'thoroughly deserved' his win

Jersey's rising tennis star Scott Clayton won the singles title at the prestigious Road to Wimbledon event.

He beat Newcastle's Ben Lott, 6-2 1-6 6-2, in a tough fought final to become a champion on the grass court at SW19.

The 14-year-old told BBC Jersey: "It's a really good honour to win this event. It's been quite hard and I've played many good people.

"I know now that I'm up there with these guys and I've nothing to loose, I can just go out there and play."

"I went in there not really expecting to win and didn't play well in the first set and then managed to really pull myself together and change my game style and play well."

Thousands of aspiring tennis players entered the competition at regional level with Clayton winning the chance to represent the Channel Islands in the national finals at the All England Club.

"It's a great statistic, thinking about the 10,000 people that entered this event and I've won, it is really unbelievable."

Clayton was presented with his trophy by Tim Henman who said the Jersey teenager had played a great tournament.

"It's fantastic and he thoroughly deserved it. It's an opportunity he can hopefully grasp and build on," Henman told the BBC.

Clayton will represent Jersey at the Youth Commonwealth Games this autumn.
