Saturday's Queen's diary
Simon Austin and Mark Jolly
With all the pre-Wimbledon gossip from Queen's Club

Andy Roddick
Roddick equalled the record for the world's fastest serve

Young gun goes for it

Saturday at Queen's will go down in history as the day Andy Roddick equalled Greg Rusedski's world record serve of 149mph.

But there is one other little fact that will probably be forgotten among all the celebrations.

Andre Agassi actually got the serve back and went on to win the point, if not the match.

"Jeez," said the Las Vegan. "Sounds like I got the record as well then!"

The whole subject of the world's fastest serve is not quite what it seems.

For one thing, there are not speed guns on every court and they are not always the most accurate devices on the planet.

There are those that swear Roscoe Tanner, one of Bjorn Borg's rivals from the 1970s, could serve at 150mph - and that was with a wooden racket.

Hawkeye Henman

While we're on the subject of technology, Tim Henman had to smile with embarrassment during his defeat by Sebastien Grosjean.

Henman vigorously objected to a line call on a Grosjean serve.

But BBC viewers were shown, via Hawkeye, that the ball was in fact in and Henman was wrong.

John Lloyd signalled the news to Henman, who immediately curtailed his protest with a sheepish grin.

Henman said: "I think Hawkeye is a good idea.

"They say it is accurate to half a centimetre but in terms of what we are looking for, half a centimetre is a lot. But it does highlight mistakes."

Brad the backstop

Top coach Brad Gilbert seems determined to keep himself in the limelight.

After attracting notice for wearing a 'Metallica' hat earlier in the week, he behaved as if he was at a baseball match during the encounter between Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi - his present and past clients.

When a ball flew into the crowd off Roddick's racket, Gilbert leaned right over the row in front of him to catch it.

The people sitting there told him they were perfectly capable of catching it themselves, only to be told they probably would have dropped it.

Roddick said: "I saw him rise over four people, but it was a good grab. What are the odds on him getting Play for the Day on CNN?

"You could probably get odds on that. You can get odds on anything over here."

The only way to travel

Problems on the tube meant thousands of fans had trouble getting to Queen's on Saturday.

But most of the members still managed to get to their seats ahead of the first semi-final.

Funny that.

One wag was probably not far wide of the mark when he said using public transport means getting a taxi for most of the members.

Keep it down!

Andre Agassi was none too enamoured with the stadium announcer after his defeat by Andy Roddick.

The official got a bit carried away in trying to emphasise the age-gap between 20-year-old Roddick and his 33-year-old adversary.

"He was certainly having a good time out there, but I don't know if anyone else was - especially not me," Agassi joked afterwards.

"It's not really what you want before you're about to go on court and compete.

"Every arena throws up its obstacles and the announcer is the obstacle here."
