McGinty made his name in rugby league before changing codes

Worcester Warriors backs and defensive coach Billy McGinty has signed a new deal that will see him remain with the club until at least 2012.

The Scot is a former Wigan rugby league player and Great Britain international.

He told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "I'm really pleased to have agreed the new contract as I've really enjoyed my time with Warriors.

"The club has the right blend in the squad, with young players coming through the ranks."

Glasgow-born McGinty represented Great Britain four times, won two Challenge Cups, two Regal Trophies, Premiership and league championships as well as two World Club Championships.

He has enjoyed spells as assistant coach at Wigan and Huddersfield Giants, before a spell at Sale in rugby union while he then joined Warriors when the club was promoted to the Guinness Premiership.

Warriors director of rugby Mike Ruddock said: "It really is great news that Billy has decided to extend his stay at Warriors and we are all delighted that he wants to continue to work with the team.

"Billy is hugely respected by all at the Warriors and his excellent work with our defence has made us a much tougher team to break down than in previous years.

"He is a talented coach, a very conscientious and hard working professional."

McGinty's work on the defensive systems at Warriors has helped ensure the team have not conceded a try in almost four hours of Guinness Premiership rugby.

That record will face another stiff test on Saturday when the Warriors head to London Irish in the Guinness Premiership at 1500 GMT.
