Even Jonah Lomu had to take a back seat as England outscored their illustrious opponents seven-to-five on the try count. England boss Clive Woodward, whose preparations for the non-cap match were ravaged by injuries, saw his inexperienced team rise to the challenge magnificently. Gloucester's 19-year-old wing James Simpson-Daniel took the individual honours, scoring a remarkable 40-metre solo try featuring an audacious dummy before out-sprinting Lomu.
But there were quality contributions throughout the England line-up, giving Woodward plenty of food for thought just 48 hours before he announces his squad to tour Argentina next month. Newcastle fly-half Dave Walder finished with 21 points from a try, five conversions and two penalties, while there was also a try double for Bristol wing Phil Christophers. Full-back Michael Horak, hooker Steve Thompson and flanker James Forrester - with a 65-metre run-in - also got in on the scoring act as England established a 17-0 lead after 25 minutes and never looked back. New Zealand legend Lomu made several of his trademark powerful bursts, but was eclipsed by the precocious Simpson-Daniel and could not get in on the scoring act. The Barbarians suffered an unfortunate hat-trick of early injury blows - centre Stephane Glas, skipper Todd Blackadder and replacement Thomas Castaignede all limping off through hamstring problems - and never really recovered.
Scotland number eight Simon Taylor impressed with two tries, with Ian Jones, Percy Montgomery and Pat Lam also breaching England's defence. But the Baa-Baas found themselves out-gunned in every department. England skipper Phil Vickery, leading his country for the first time, proved an inspired choice for the job, and his Gloucester colleague, scrum-half Andy Gomarsall, won the man-of-the-match award with a controlled display. Walder kicked England into a second-minute lead, and their opening try arrived 18 minutes later in blistering fashion. Gloucester flanker Forrester received the ball 10 metres inside his own half, but he galloped away and even dummied Lomu before touching down for a sparkling score which Walder improved. Spectacular With the Barbarians struggling for continuity amid their plethora of injuries, hooker Thompson ploughed over from a well-worked line-out move which involved impressive lock Alex Codling. Jones opened the Barbarians' account before a 62,000 crowd were provided with the outstanding memory from a 12-try spectacular. Simpson-Daniel totally bemused Montgomery through his sleight of hand before the 19-year-old sprinted round a leaden-footed Lomu on the outside and evaded Christian Cullen's cover tackle to get the touchdown after a video replay. England were in no mood to let a 22-5 advantage slip and, although the scoring exchanges were pretty much level after that, Woodward's men never lost direction or determination. It was a spectacular victory that provided graphic confirmation that England possess an expanding group of richly-talented young players.
