But the Baa-Baas found themselves out-gunned in every department.

England skipper Phil Vickery, leading his country for the first time, proved an inspired choice for the job, and his Gloucester colleague, scrum-half Andy Gomarsall, won the man-of-the-match award with a controlled display.

Walder kicked England into a second-minute lead, and their opening try arrived 18 minutes later in blistering fashion.

Gloucester flanker Forrester received the ball 10 metres inside his own half, but he galloped away and even dummied Lomu before touching down for a sparkling score which Walder improved.

With the Barbarians struggling for continuity amid their plethora of injuries, hooker Thompson ploughed over from a well-worked line-out move which involved impressive lock Alex Codling.

Jones opened the Barbarians' account before a 62,000 crowd were provided with the outstanding memory from a 12-try spectacular.

Simpson-Daniel totally bemused Montgomery through his sleight of hand before the 19-year-old sprinted round a leaden-footed Lomu on the outside and evaded Christian Cullen's cover tackle to get the touchdown after a video replay.

England were in no mood to let a 22-5 advantage slip and, although the scoring exchanges were pretty much level after that, Woodward's men never lost direction or determination.

It was a spectacular victory that provided graphic confirmation that England possess an expanding group of richly-talented young players.
