Woodward praises young stars
James Forrester beats Jonah Lomu to score England's first try
Lomu could not deny Forrester his moment of glory
England coach Clive Woodward paid tribute to his young side after their emphatic victory against a world-class Barbarians side.

The 53-29 win at Twickenham gave Woodward plenty of food for thought just two days before he announces his squad to tour Argentina.

Gloucester youngsters James Simpson-Daniel and James Forrester both produced outstanding try-scoring displays.

Simpson-Daniel even had the audacity to sprint past All Blacks winger Jonah Lomu on his 40-yard solo run to the line.

Woodward fielded nine uncapped players and was delighted with their efforts.

"I was very excited about today. We wanted to play without fear, and there were some excellent performances," he said.

"It was a huge improvement on what we did against the Barbarians in this fixture 12 months ago, but we will have to wait until Argentina to make an accurate assessment."

England had the added bonus of keeping Lomu's name off the scoresheet.

Depth

"Not to let Jonah Lomu score against you in a Barbarians side is quite a feat," added Woodward.

"Certainly, Simpson-Daniel scoring a try by going around him brought a smile to my face.

"We prepared all week as if this was a Test match, and the attitude of the players has been brilliant."

England captain Phil Vickery added: "Everyone went out there and had a go.

"I knew that as long as we applied ourselves and played the way that we had trained, then we would do ourselves justice.

Barbarians coach Rod Macqueen has injury doubts over seven players - including Todd Blackadder, Stephane Glas, Thomas Castaignede and Kopu Vanisiing - before Wednesday's game against Wales.

But Macqueen was quick to praise England's performance.

"It was a great effort from a lot of the young, up-and-coming England players - there is a lot of depth there," he said.
