Luctonians' Alex Davidson targets comeback

Alex Davidson
Davidson played eight seasons with Birmingham & Solihull

Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson hopes to be back playing in two weeks after successfully coming through a training session this week.

Davidson joined Lucs from Birmingham & Solihull but suffered a partial tear of his Achilles in pre-season.

"I had a run last night which surprised a few - I donned my kit and got my legs out for the first time," he said.

"To ironic cheers I managed to complete the session but it could be another two weeks before I start a match."

Davidson returned to the north Herefordshire club during the summer after spending eight seasons playing in the Championship with Birmingham & Solihull.

The original plan was for him to combine his job as director of rugby with a playing role in which it was hoped his experience would be key to the newly promoted squad's chances.

But he suffered a partial tear of his Achilles during the first pre-season training session and so has been focusing on the coaching aspect of his job so far this season.

He is looking forward to returning to competitive rugby as the increased rigours of National Two North are starting to tell on the Lucs squad.

"We have got two or three other injuries throughout the squad including key personnel such as Chris Jaques who was doing well in the line out," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"But it is nice to see other players coming in and filling the berth.

"Players have now got an opportunity to prove themselves over the next three or four weeks while these players are injured and last weekend a few stood up and claimed their spot."

John Morris landed a last-kick penalty to claim a 21-21 draw for Lucs in the home match against Huddersfield enabling the Kingsland-based club to end a two-game losing run.

They currently lie in seventh place in the National Two North table and will look to kick on when they travel to fourth-bottom Morley on Saturday.

"I am not reading too much into that [Morley's league position] as they have had some reasonable results along the way," said Davidson.

"We have just got to play it as though it is a cup final every week and that is the mentality we have got to keep throughout the season.

"We seem to get the travel right as we get there in good time and then turn up and perform, but every week is a challenge and a bit of an adventure."
