Luctonians' Alex Davidson on the road to recovery

Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson says his recovery from a torn Achilles is ahead of schedule.

Davidson sustained the injury during the first pre-season training session but says his recovery is going well.

"The consultant has told me that with a partial rupture the best approach is isolation in an air cast boot.

"Then it will be a case of pushing on with the rehabilitation and be quite aggressive with it which should see me back some time in November," he said.

Davidson started his rugby career with the north Herefordshire-based club but then moved on to Championship side Birmingham and Solihull, for whom he played for eight seasons.

He has recently moved back to Herefordshire and says the offer of the director of rugby post at Luctonians came at just the right time for him.

"It's a new world to me as I have normally been just one of the troops, albeit a very vocal one," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Geography plays a part as we are a long way from the M5 corridor and recruitment is proving quite difficult

"With this injury, for me not to have my influence directly on the training field is a big change for me.

"I am having just to stand back and then limp into the middle and direct operations from there.

"But at the same time it is quite a positive as I do get that different view of the game and the preparations."

A major part of his role has been the recruitment of players ahead of the club's forthcoming National League Two North campaign.

Davidson admits they are still trying to supplement their squad for the challenges ahead as they are well aware they will need far greater strength in depth.

"We are making a big push now as we are still a few players light of where we need to be for the upcoming challenge," he said.

"Obviously Lucs has always been fully amateur up until now but we are just starting to broach the subject of whether we need to start investing in players.

"Geography plays a part as we are a long way from the M5 corridor and recruitment is proving quite difficult."

Luctonians will play a pre-season game against Welsh club Newbridge at Mortimer Park on Saturday, 28 August before opening their league programme with a home game against Leicester Lions a week later on Saturday, 4 September.
