Geoff Griffiths column

...there are a number of elements of our game we can improve on and we have been working hard this week to implement these for arguably the toughest game of the season at Headingley against Leeds

Saturday evening saw me finally make it through a South West derby without breaking my jaw.

The atmosphere at Brickfields was great with both sets of fans in good voice and it was great to get a hard-fought win against an ambitious Pirates team.

The way we pulled together for the 10 minutes when we were down to 14 men was particularly impressive and I think really shows how we are growing as a team.

The Pirates threw everything at us but somehow we managed to keep them out which is testament to our fitness and organisation.

Despite the win, at our Monday morning meeting it was clear there are a still number of elements of our game we can improve on and we have been working hard this week to implement these for arguably the toughest game of the season at Headingley against Leeds.

This week, I have employed the services of a co-author in the form of Ross Allen to publicise and hopefully popularise a number of the nicknames in the Plymouth Albion team.

Being a close-knit group these names are used day-to-day so it is only fair that these become public knowledge.

Here are some of our personal favourites

Jake Childs became affectionately known as Darnell in pre-season after the albino Big Brother contestant. It emerged that Jake's "genetics" lead him to avoid the sun where possible without carrying a bucket of sun cream. To our delight it has stuck and it is going to be hard for him to shake off.

Ed King aka Gok Wan or "Tin Grin" is often the victim of merciless abuse. A recent haircut rendered him Gok Wan and we are getting as much out of this as we can before he changes his style. "Tin Grin" emerged after James Tideswell knocked two of Kingy's front teeth loose in a game of "touch" and Ed had to wear an adolescent brace to retain his good looks.

Kyle "Boxhead" Marriott
Kyle Marriott, or "Boxhead" as he is lovingly referred to by team-mates

Boxhead has pretty much replaced Kyle Marriot's actual name for good after his Albion profile picture revealed his unusually box-like head.

Our leader and captain Arthur Brenton has been dubbed Treebeard. General consensus agrees that he both looks and sounds like the Lord of the Rings character. There is little chance he is going to shake this off as it has been rattling around for months now with little sign of relief.

Tom Jarvis recently dubbed Mikey Lewis "Stopwatch". Mikey gets a lot of stick for getting injured when most of the time he isn't doing anything in any way and Jarvo created "stopwatch" to guess what minute Mikey would receive his inevitable hammer blow.

Alex Davies is often surrounded by banter from the boys. Being a Scouser he always has something to say for himself which often leaves him in the firing line. As well as all the "short angry man" abuse he gets, it is his striking resemblance to our great leader Mr G. Dawe that fuels most of the boy's abuse.

With this little insight it would be good to hear some of these names being used on the Sidelines!
