Jersey RFC could benefit from the RFU's proposed changes |
Jersey could be playing national league rugby next season, provided they are not relegated from London One. The island side is set to benefit from proposed changes to the structure of the national game, if they are approved by the Rugby Football Union Council. Under the plans London One, in which Jersey are currently third, would be re-named National Three London. If they were to gain promotion at the end of this season they would move up to National Two South. But the changes could come at a price as the plans dictate that the division that Jersey would play in next season would expand from 12 to 14 teams, meaning more cost and travel for the island side. "It'll be an extra burden on the squad," club president Bill Dempsey told BBC Sport. "Regardless of what you think an extra four games will have an impact on players. "There'll be less free weekends. It's good to have a break for a weekend sometimes for everyone to mend their bodies and recharge the batteries." | National divisions will be an easier sell to sponsors. London One does not have as much appeal as National Three South Jersey RFC president Bill Dempsey |
As the plans are yet to be finalised, Dempsey is unsure whether Jersey would win promotion, or even enter a promotion play-off should they finish second. The island side are five points behind leaders Shelford, who are undefeated this season, so a runner's-up spot is the most realistic highest-placed finish for Jersey. "We've had no certain clarification on how you'd get promoted this season," said Dempsey. "The winning teams in each division will go up, but I'm not sure if second-placed teams will go into a play-off." Financially, Dempsey feels that sponsors would prefer a national league to the London division Jersey are currently in. "National divisions will be an easier sell to sponsors. London One does not have as much appeal as National Three South," he said. Provided the plans are approved by the RFU Council they will come into force from the start of next season.
