Maggs got the final try for Jersey as they stay third in London One |
Jersey kept their top-three position in London One with a 26-7 win at St Peter against old rivals Portsmouth. Jersey raced into a 21-0 half-time lead after two Mitch Burton penalties, a great individual score from Charlie Clyde-Smith and a Ryan Morgan try. But the island did not captialise on their first-half success in the second period of the game. Portsmouth got a penalty try to reduce the deficit before a late Ashley Maggs try restored Jersey's lead. "We didn't want to give up anything today because our supporters were so good," skipper Talite Vaioleti told BBC Radio Jersey. "Team spirit is getting higher and higher and every week we're coming up better and better," the former Tongan international added. But Jersey coach Ben Harvey felt his side were fortunate to come away with such a big win. "I think we were a bit lucky to be honest. "If we were up against a side who had a bit more firepower and we'd have given them that much possession in the second half we would have come unstuck."
