Captain Sean Long is one of several key players Hull have lost to injury in recent weeks |
Hull FC chief executive James Rule is calling for a review of the current Super League £1.6m salary cap to allow for replacing injured players. Rule told BBC Radio Humberside the current structure forced clubs to use players who are not physically or mentally ready. Rule said: "I'm not advocating we scrap it, it's a great concept for the equalisation of the competition". Currently clubs cannot sign players if they do not have room under the cap. Super League's salary cap rules were introduced in 2008 and work on a 'real time' system that calculates a club's position at the start of, and throughout, the season. The combined earnings of the top 25 players on the club's books must not exceed £1.6m. In recent weeks, Hull FC have been without experienced players such as captain Sean Long, Mark O'Meley, Craig Fitzgibbon and Danny Tickle whilst Richard Horne, Willie Manu and Epalahame Lauaki are all currently sidelined for extended periods. Rule believes allowing clubs to bring in players without the restriction of the salary cap in such circumstances would benefit the competition as whole, not just the club concerned.
