The world club champions were reduced to also-ran status as Saints underlined their Grand Final intentions with a stunning eight-try blitz that pulled them level at the top. It was Saints' second win over the Bulls in six weeks but their first over their main rivals on their own turf since the summer era began seven years ago.
The visitors were simply unstoppable as they clocked up a half-century, with Darren Albert and Keiron Cunningham both crossing twice and Paul Sculthorpe kicking nine goals. "We were beaten by the better side," admitted dejected Bulls coach Brian Noble. "A few of our basic fundamentals went sadly awry but we have done our fair share of winning and we have just go to learn from it. "We are still in a great position. We are still top of the competition and we have got five games left and we are looking forward to those five games. We will take it on the chin." The Bulls had raced out of the blocks to open up an 8-0 lead inside 10 minutes, with Tevita Vaikona and Michael Withers combining to send Scott Naylor racing under the posts. But by the 17th minute Saints had the lead as first Martin Gleeson went over and then Paul Newlove followed on his side's next attack.
Bradford were slow to deal effectively with a John Stankevitch burst in the 29th minute and Cunningham crashed over for another four points from dummy half. Saints then took an iron grip on the game with two killer breaks either side of half-time. Sean Long sparked the first with a smart interception from a Paul Deacon pass, sprinting clear and coolly sending Albert away in a lightning break. Another came within minutes of the restart as forward Darren Britt shrugged off two would-be tacklers and found Long in acres of space to dash to the line. Cunningham again went over from acting half before he and Long had tries ruled out by the video referee either side of a Stankevitch score. A rare home attack in the 65th minute brought some relief as Stuart Fielden muscled over for the first of two consolation efforts. And Fielden gathered a Deacon kick to cross again in the 71st minute. But Albert completed the rout when he burst down the touchline in the final minute and Sculthorpe added a brilliant conversion. Saints coach Ian Millward said: "I wasn't worried about the points we conceded because I thought we defended outstandingly. "I am very proud of the players. We were sharp, got into a rhythm and our ball movement and handling was very good. It was a fine performance."
