York City Knights coach Dave Woods says he was left "pulling his hair out" after their 76-12 defeat at Widnes.

The Vikings scored eight second-half tries, with Matt Barron and John Davies scoring consolation efforts for York.

Woods told BBC Radio York: "We just didn't show up, we were just poor again. You just keep pulling your hair out, what else do you do?

"We knew Widnes would play well, they've got blokes who are trying to get a Super League contract."

The Knights suffered a number of injuries during the game, but Woods said that was no excuse.

"It didn't help at all but blokes have to be tough, it's a tough sport," he said.

"We competed for the first 10-15 minutes and then Widnes had four sets of six where they scored three tries on the bounce, and they all came from our errors."

One bright spot was the display by youngster Kristian Brining, who was promoted from the reserves.

"I thought he was really good, he made a couple of the older fellows look stupid with the way he defended and brought blokes down," he said.

"There were some good individual performances, but not too many. Everybody needs to be good.

"Some players think their ability is far more than it is and they're not up to it.

"For others, it's a mental thing, some just can't concentrate for 80 minutes because they've never had to do that before at that intensity."

The Knights have nearly three weeks before their next game, which is against Hunslet, and Woods warned of major team changes by then.
