After trailing by just six points at half-time, the York City Knights capitulated to lose 42-16 to Barrow at the Huntington Stadium.

The Knights are still to win in the Championship, despite tries from Jonny Presley, Dave Sutton and John Davies.

Coach Dave Woods told BBC Radio York his players need to be smarter.

He said: "I'm sick of trying to tell the blokes half-backs need to go straight and blokes out wide need to give options."

Woods said what most upset him was the players did not play the way they trained, and was baffled as to why.

He added: "Jack Lee was a big loss. We thought [replacement hooker] Paul Stamp would do all right but he just wasn't there today.

"It starts at the ruck, poor service from dummy-half and then poor service from the half-backs not carrying the ball forwards, not taking the ball to the line."

Woods enforced extra training on Monday night for his errant players, and threatened a spell in the reserves.

"You can only give blokes so many opportunities and when they're not taking them you just have to put them back in reserve grade and let them try and get some form back."

The Knights' next game is at Widnes, a team who have started much more poorly than expected, but the prospect gives Woods little consolation.

"If we turn up like that again with that sort of effort and performance we're not going to do ourselves any favours," he said.

"We need to find (players) who want to play the game, be tough and do the job we want."
