York City Knights recover to earn Hunslet draw

York City Knights

York City Knights came from 26-4 down to earn a 28-28 draw with Hunslet in their Championship season opener.

Tries from Jack Lee, Matt Garside (2), Steve Lewis and Dave Sutton plus four Chris Thorman kicks gave York a share of the spoils.

Knights coach Dave Woods told BBC Radio York: "We were very poor in the first half and very good in the second, but you can't play the game like that.

"There's 80 minutes of footy and you need to compete for the full 80."

Woods added: "If we do the things right early, then we don't have to come back. It was very disappointing to start the way we did in the first half.

"We picked the 17 we thought would do the job today and it hasn't done it, so we'll have to look at that."

The Knights are next in action on Thursday when they entertain Sheffield Eagles at the Huntington Stadium.

"It's a short turnaround so we need to be smart about what we do on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday," said Woods.

"We think we can knock Sheffield over on our home soil, but we'll need to be a lot smarter than in that display."
