York City Knights have signed half-back Jy-mel Coleman from London Skolars and agreed terms for a second season with forward Carl Barrow.
The club want Coleman, 21, to add competition at half-back and Barrow to bring more experience in the forwards.
General manager Ian Wilson told BBC Radio York: "Jy-mel will add some real competition there.
"Carl hasn't played a lot at this level but he's got a good head on his shoulders," he added.
Coleman has also been part of the Leeds Met University side which Wilson said is a good standard of rugby league.
He will become only the third specialist half-back at the Knights.
Wilson said: "We've only really got Chris Thorman and Jonathan Schofield who are out and out half backs.
"We have got other players like Luke Helliwell and Adie Hampshire who can go in there but he'll give us that extra competition to keep the other two players on their toes and hopefully push for a first-team place."
Meanwhile the Knights have agreed a pre-season friendly with Castleford Tigers.
They will play for the Paul Higgins Cup, in memory of the former York coach and Castleford player who died in October 2008.
"Castleford were really keen to play the game over at York last year," said Wilson.
"They said all along they'd like to do it again if possible and we're really pleased to get that fixture in.
"It means a lot to both clubs and we like to put on a good performance in memory of Paul who did a lot for us and the Tigers."
