Thorman up for Knights' challenge

York City Knights' new signing Chris Thorman cannot wait to begin his dual player/coaching role at the club.

The former England captain, 29, has signed a two-year deal, allowing him to carry on as a player, while becoming the Knights' new assistant coach.

"I just figured it was a really good opportunity, especially to work for a club like York City Knights," he said.

"I feel I can help develop the young players and have a lot of positive input," Thorman told BBC Radio York.

"I'm only 29 and I'm sure I'll get chopped down a few times and I'll learn from my mistakes.

"I'm just really pleased that York have given me the opportunity to do that."

Thorman's elder brothers, Neil and Paul, both played for York. And he admits that he spoke to both of them before he made his decision.

I think when you buy into concepts that the coaches are bringing this year then promotion is definitely a possibility

"I briefly spoke with Neil but in depth with Paul," said Thorman. "And Paul had nothing but good things to say about the club.

"I know a lot has changed since they were both here, but all Paul had to say was positive things about the fans and the way the club is run, so it was a no-brainer for Paul."

Thorman's move to York means that he could now come up against brother Paul when the Knights meet London Skolars next season.

"It's funny," said Thorman. "I didn't even think about it, to be honest.

"I've played against Paul and Neil once before for Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup when they played at Gateshead and we smashed them so hopefully we'll smash them next season."

Thorman also maintains that promotion has to be the aim for the Knights next year after making last month's Championship 1 play-offs.

"It was pretty close last season," said Thorman. "And I think we've got the potential to go that step further.

"The things I'll bring to the club on the playing field are going to be quite obvious from my experience in Super League. But, off the field, the players have to buy into a lifestyle change.

"When you buy into concepts that the coaches are bringing this year then promotion is definitely a possibility."
