Newcastle 2-1 Belfast

Belfast Giants player-coach Steve Thornton
Steve Thornton's Giants have played four game more than Coventry

The Belfast Giants remain top of the Elite League despite this defeat in Whitley Bay on Saturday night.

The visitors went in front in the first period thanks to a goal from defenceman Michael Jacobsen.

David Longstaff equalised for the Vipers on a power-play in the second period and Ryan Mahrle won it for Newcastle in the third period.

Coventry missed the chance to take over top spot when they lost 6-2 to fellow title rivals Nottingham.

The Giants, who are a point clear of both Coventry and Nottingham, face Newcastle in their next game on Friday night in Belfast.
