Belfast Giants opened the defence of their Challenge Cup title by earning a 6-2 away win over the Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday night. Pierre-Luc Faubert (two), Craig Peacock, Shane Johnson, Evan Cheverie and Pat Bateman scored for Belfast. The match also doubled as the third-place play-off in the four-team Gardiner Cup tournament in Edinburgh. The Giants suffered a 7-0 defeat against Canadian team the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday. Hamilton compete in the American Hockey League and joined the Giants, Edinburgh and the Toronto Marlies in the four-team competition. The Bulldogs and the Marlies are affiliate teams for NHL outfits the Toronto Maples Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens. Belfast will be back in action in the Challenge Cup against Newcastle at the Odyssey Arena on Friday evening. Elite League champions Sheffield are also involved in Group A in the competition.
