Tim Cook was on target for the Giants in both weekend games |
The Belfast Giants regrouped from Saturday's home penalty shootout defeat by Sheffield to stun the Steelers 4-2 away in Sunday's Elite League clash. Three points from the two weekend games against the champions was an excellent return for Steve Thornton's side. Tim Cook put the Giants ahead on Sunday only for Joey Talbot and Rod Sarich to strike for Sheffield. However, Evan Cheverie, Craig Peacock and Colin Shields scored in the final three minutes for the delighted Giants. Pat Bateman's dust-up with Scott Basiuk appeared to fire up the Giants in the closing stages of the game. Shields' clinching goal was an empty-net effort in the closing seconds. On Sunday, the Giants suffered the penalty shootout defeat in their first home game of the new Elite League season played before a crowd of almost 5,000 spectators at the Odyssey Arena. Joe Talbot put the Steelers ahead after 16 minutes but Pierre-Luc Faubert levelled for the home side just before the end of the first period. Scott Basiuk restored Sheffield's lead on 45 minutes only for Tim Cook to equalise four minutes later. It took a shootout to separate the teams with the champions prevailing.
