Daniel Alfredsson scored to steer Ottawa past Buffalo and into the Stanley Cup finals for the first time. Alfredsson's 10th play-off strike earned a 3-2 win in overtime and a 4-1 series victory in the best-of-seven NHL Eastern Conference finals.
The Senators are trying to become the first Canadian team to win the Cup since Montreal in 1993.
They now face the winner of the Western Conference final between Detroit and Anaheim which is tied at 2-2.
Buffalo's Jochen Hecht had opened the scoring in the second period, backhanding the puck past Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery for his fourth goal of the play-offs.
But the Senators equalised with just over four minutes remaining in the period on Dany Heatley's sixth play-off goal and taking a 2-1 lead when Jason Spezza netted his seventh post-season goal, 39 seconds before the end of the period.
But the Sabres equalised nine minutes into the third period on a power play goal by Maxim Afinogenov, before Alfredsson finally clinched vicitory for Ottawa, nine minutes and 32 seconds into overtime.
