The Detroit Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks 2-0 on Monday to advance to the Western Conference finals, where they will face the Anaheim Ducks. Two first-period goals by Mikael Samuelsson proved sufficient as the visitors claimed the series 4-2.
He scored the opener with about four minutes left and added another eight seconds before the end of the period.
San Jose outplayed the Red Wings for stretches but Detroit goaltender Dominik Hasek made several good saves.
