Bastiman's Borderlescott has won more than 600,000 in prize money |
Yorkshire trainer Robin Bastiman's dual Group One winner Borderlescott will compete in the £1m Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint on 13 December. The horse won the Nunthorpe Stakes at York for the second year in a row, and might have won the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp but for being boxed in. Cowthorpe-based Bastiman told BBC Radio York: "He's a one-off, he has the heart of a lion." His exploits brought Bastiman another award from Go Racing in Yorkshire. For the second year in a row the trainer picked up the annual award for connections judged to have made an outstanding contribution to racing in the county. Owners Jim Edgar and Les Donaldson joined Bastiman to receive the award at Doncaster racecourse on 19 November. | As long as he's not drawn in a coffin box, which is one to four, hopefully he'll be OK |
Recalling the second Nunthorpe success, Bastiman added: "Everything just panned out right for him. It was a fast pace and he got the right draw. "The horse has such a good character, there's no badness in him whatsoever." Borderlescott's success is remarkable given that he started life as a handicapper. "He ran his first race (at York) as a two-year-old," said Bastiman. "He's worked his way up from handicapper to Group One. "I just basically train sprinters because you've got no chance of competing against Godolphin and the Coolmore team." Bastiman is delighted at the invitation to go to Hong Kong and added: "That's where he goes, he deserves to take his chance. "He's really well. It's six furlongs. OK, maybe his best trip is a stiff five furlongs but he's won the Stewards Cup over six. "As long as he's not drawn in a coffin box, which is one to four, hopefully he'll be OK."
