The John Smith's Cup attracts one of York's biggest crowds of the season |
Sirvino, trained at Thirsk by David Barron, won the 50th John Smith's Cup at York on Saturday. The 16-1 shot beat 11-2 joint favourite Kingdom of Fife into second place with Richard Fahey's Albaqaa third. Malton-based Fahey had been hoping for a record-breaking third consecutive win in the race. Barron told BBC Radio York: "It's a smashing race to win and a nice course to win on and to win a good one like that is very nice. "When he was drawn 16 you have to be worried but he's a good horse and you never quite know what he's capable of." Winning jockey Neil Brown told BBC Radio York: "It's the biggest win of my career. "The horse has won his last four and he's got better with each run. He's done it well today."
