Sirvano denies Fahey hat-trick

Racing at York
The John Smith's Cup attracts one of York's biggest crowds of the season

Sirvino, trained at Thirsk by David Barron, won the 50th John Smith's Cup at York on Saturday.

The 16-1 shot beat 11-2 joint favourite Kingdom of Fife into second place with Richard Fahey's Albaqaa third.

Malton-based Fahey had been hoping for a record-breaking third consecutive win in the race.

Barron told BBC Radio York: "It's a smashing race to win and a nice course to win on and to win a good one like that is very nice.

"When he was drawn 16 you have to be worried but he's a good horse and you never quite know what he's capable of."

Winning jockey Neil Brown told BBC Radio York: "It's the biggest win of my career.

"The horse has won his last four and he's got better with each run. He's done it well today."
