Malton jockey Frederik Tylicki became champion apprentice for 2009 after reaching 68 winners, a figure his rival David Probert could not overhaul. Tylicki, 23, dedicated his title to Jan Wilson and Jamie Kyne, the two jockeys who died in a recent fire in Norton. "I was very close to Jamie, he was one of my best friends, and I knew Jan. I've been riding with them nearly every day, you don't forget about them. "When they renamed the championship with their names, I had to win it." His trainer and boss Richard Fahey said: "He's had a fantastic year, he's a heavy lad, he's worked hard at it and becoming champion apprentice is a big achievement. "Paul Hanagan was champion apprentice and he's our stable jockey, and Robert Winston was champion apprentice here, so we seem to do well with apprentices." The title was not decided until the penultimate day of the season and Tylicki added: "Hopefully we gave the public a good run for their money, it was very exciting. "The last week got very tense, it was exciting to be in such a position and it worked out my way." Tylicki first hit the headlines in July 2008 when he rode Flying Clarets to victory in the John Smith's Cup at York, Fahey's favourite race and course. "Mr. Fahey... gives you a good chance but you also have to work to get those chances, so if you put in the effort, he repays you. "He's supported me really well in the last two seasons. We've gone on from strength to strength and I'll definitely ride for him next year."
