Agathangelou in rare British win at Yonnex Championship

Jersey's Mariana Agathangelou was a rare British success in the Yonnex All England Badminton Championships.

Agathangelou and Heather Olver disposed of Welsh duo Caroline Harvey and Carissa Turner to secure their passage into the first round.

But there was huge disappointment for the in-form Jersey star Elizabeth Cann in the singles.

Cann slumped to a 21-15 21-16 defeat against Linda Zechiri of Bulgaria in the qualifying rounds.

"It is always hard to play the All England, being on home turf, so there were some nerves," said Agathangelou after the 21-12 21-9 success against Caroline Harvey and Carissa Turner.

"But we knew we were a better pair than those two. We went out and did the job quite well and we are pretty happy."

Elizabeth Cann started well in the women's singles by beating Canadian Anna Rice 22-20 14-21 21-14 but then slumped to defeat by Zechiri.

"I'm disappointed because I've never lost to her before," said 30-year-old Cann. "I didn't play anywhere near my best."

"My form had been good until now but I was just not able to perform today."

Her defeat leaves Scotland's Susan Eglestaff as the only home-based player still into the first round of the draw.
