Cann's win in straight games helped England to a 5-0 whitewash

Jersey's Elizabeth Cann has won her opening match for England in the European Mixed Team badminton championships in Liverpool.

Cann, 29, beat the Czech Republic's Kristina Ludikova 21-17 21-19 in the women's singles match as England came away with a 5-0 victory.

Fellow islander Mariana Agathangelou was not selected in the opening match.

Other English winners included the Olympic mixed doubles pairing of Donna Kellogg and Anthony Clark.

England top their group and face Wales on Wednesday and a likely group decider against unbeaten Scotland on Thursday.
