Mariana Agathangelou made the semi-finals in the mixed doubles |
There were mixed results for Jersey's Mariana Agathangelou and Elizabeth Cann at the Swedish Badminton International in Stockholm. Both players were defeated in the first round of their favoured events. Agathangelou went out in the women's doubles while Cann was bundled out 21-17 21-14 in the women's singles to Chinese player Zhang Xi. However, Agathangelou did have success in the mixed doubles with new partner Robin Middleton. The pair won through qualifying and then made their way through to Saturday evening's semi-finals, dispatching number two seeds Baptiste Careme and Laura Choinet of France along the way. In the semi final, Agathangelou and Middleton lost to the more experienced English pair of Robert Adcock and Heather Olver 21-15 23-21. Agathangelou took positives from the defeat.
Elizabeth Cann lost in the first round of the women's singles in Stockholm |
"It's our first tournament together," she said. "To go through qualifying and all the way through to the semi finals is great. "We had some very good games beating the European junior champions and the French number two seeds, so we have to take the positives." Both Agathangelou and Cann will be in action this coming weekend at the English National Badminton Championships in Manchester.
