Gallichan added the record to the Jeux des Isles gold he won in May |
Young Jersey swimmers set two new island records at the National Age Group Championships in Sheffield on Tuesday. Tom Gallichan, 15, lowered the island's best mark in the 100m backstroke to 1:02.22 at Ponds Forge. And 14-year-old Emma Glendenning bettered her own island best mark in the 100m freestyle, in 1:01.22. "Tom Gallichan's 100 back was a cracking swim," AIB Tigers coach Nathan Jegou told BBC Radio Jersey. "It broke Simon le Couillard's 2001 record which I believe won Simon a medal that year at he nationals." Gallichan took gold in the 200m backstroke at the Jeux des Isles in Guadeloupe in May, while Glendenning won a silver in the 800m freestyle. Jegou added that most of the squad would be trying to gain the mark needed to represent the island in India later this year. "Most of the guys now will be looking at bettering their times for the Commonwealth Youth Games."
