Black wins gold and claims a Jersey Island record competing in Australia |
Jersey swimmer Ian Black set the pool alight in Perth, Australia over the past week with some fast swims. Black set a new Island record in the 200m Breaststroke and won two gold, two silver and a bronze medal at the Western Australian Championships. He told BBC Radio Jersey: "I've had a good meet, the 2 mins 24.7 secs for the 200m breaststroke is ok, especially in the middle of training, so I'm happy." Commonwealth Games qualification is the next goal for the AIB Tiger's swimmer. | I am only a few seconds off ... but I am training well and I've got a good chance |
He added: "Our coach had us training straight through this meet because the focus is the National's (Australian National Championships) in March. If I can drop a few more seconds by then I should be close for Commonwealth's." Black faces a hard task to qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, with cut-off times being substantially harder than past years. "I am only a few seconds off in the 400m IM (Individual Medley) and the 200m breaststroke, but I am training well and I've got a good chance," he said. Black who won eight medals at the 2007 Island games in Rhodes is planning on returning to Jersey in May to compete at the 2009 Island games in land in Finland. "We should have a good team for land, it looks like Tom and JJ (Gallichan) are swimming well, and Simon (Le Coulliard) is a class swimmer, so I'm looking forward to it," he said.
