Rob Lyon's success at King's Lynn has seen him appointed GB team manager

The King's Lynn Stars are on the brink of clinching speedway's Premier League title following their latest victory.

The Stars beat Newport 59-39 at The Norfolk Arena on Wednesday, stretching their lead over second-placed Birmingham to five points.

With four meetings left, Lynn manager Rob Lyon told BBC Radio Norfolk: "It's not far away.

"We've got another couple of home meetings to get by yet, but once we've done that we're champions."

He added: "The two meetings are obviously very important and they're against some top opposition, Workington and Birmingham, so an exciting end to the season that's for sure."

Lynn have a meeting in hand over Birmingham, with the two sides facing up in the final league fixture of the season on Tuesday, 23 September.

The Stars could clinch the title before that, if Birmingham fail to get maximum points in their penultimate meeting at Glasgow.

"We could win it without racing, but we want to win in on our own merit, we want to win it on our own soil if we can.

"If it does turn out to be a title decider here against Birmingham, what a night that will be," Lyon said.

Newport started Wednesday's meeting slowly, but Lyon said his side were given a real test in the second half of the meeting.

"A lot of teams come here and for some reason don't get it dialled in straight away, then they seem to hold their own a little bit more.

"They certainly did that tonight and squared quite a few races off," he said.

Lynn last won the Premier League title in 2006, when they claimed the League, Knockout Cup and Premier Trophy treble.
