Hamill meets his rock hero Plant

Robert Plant and Billy Hamill

Californian star Billy Hamill is back in the Black Country for his farewell meeting and has met his all-time hero, Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant.

Hamill's final event is staged at Monmore Green on Sunday and he bumped into Plant as the singer watched his beloved Wolves beating Charlton.

"It was a thrilling moment for me. I took the bike around the pitch and got a great reception," said Hamill.

"I met Robert and it was a massive occasion for me."

He also discovered that Plant is a speedway fan, which dates back to his childhood.

"He was well aware of speedway and went to Cradley Heath many times as a youngster," noted the former Wolves, Cradley and Coventry star.

"I know it's a bit late now but he did say if he had known the old stadium was for sale back in the mid-90s he would have bid to keep it for speedway but he was away on tour at the time."

Hamill's farewell meeting on Sunday (1600 GMT) includes a host of Grand Prix stars and a challenge match between former Cradley Heathens and ex-Wolves riders.
