Shields was detained the Peterborough District Hospital |
Lakeside Hammers captain Adam Shields is likely to miss the rest of the speedway season after being injured in a crash at Peterborough on Thursday. Shields suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs and broken bones in his back from an accident during heat 12. His crash came just two days after team-mate Jonas Davidsson also suffered season-ending injuries in a crash in Sweden on Tuesday. The meeting was abandoned after the incident with the score at 36-36. The Essex side are now without three of their form riders, with Finn Joonas Kylmakorpi also likely to miss the remainder of the season following surgery on a shoulder injury. | This is more than just an injury crisis, it's a full- on drama Lakeside Hammers team manager Jon Cook |
Hammers team manager Jon Cook said: "The heart's been ripped from the team and there's no disguising the fact that this is more than just an injury crisis, it's a full-on drama. "We are used to injuries in the sport, but to have three long-term ones occur within weeks of each other is as tough as it gets. "When all three riders are great friends and part of a great team spirit it's even tougher to take," he added. Cook has called upon Eastbourne Eagles youngster Lewis Bridger as guest cover for Davidsson for their home meeting with Wolverhampton on Friday and will use Rider Replacement for Shields.
