Smith title bid takes huge dent

Bradley Smith
Smith has claimed two grand prix wins this season

Bradley Smith's hopes of winning the 125cc championship took a knock after failing to finish the race in Germany.

The 18-year-old from Oxfordshire, who qualified in second, took the lead early in the first lap, but then ran wide and into last position.

Smith attempted to claw his way back up the grid but crashed to end his race.

"Three crashes in one day is not the best preparation for Donington but you have to take days like that on the chin and look forward, " said Smith.

The Grand Prix was won by Smith's Aspar Aprillia team-mate Julian Simon, who now has a 30.5-point lead over the Briton in the overall standings.

Fellow Aspar rider Sergio Gadea took second place ahead of Joan Olive, who completed an all Spanish podium line-up.
