Formula 1 big picture is a feature designed to showcase a side of the sport that television cannot always portray. Over the last 20 years, Darren Heath has carved a reputation as one of F1's most original photographers. This is Darren's story behind his latest image: "Silverstone, Friday evening, 1809 BST, in front of the McLaren pits, and Lewis is having a chat. "Next to him is team mate and reigning world champion Jenson Button and they're both having a right good time being interviewed by legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker for broadcast on the BBC. | ANDREW BENSON'S BLOG |
"Such occasions are like gold dust for photographers as the drivers are relaxed and off guard, there's time to compose and shoot the shot and generally the light - either natural or artificial - is good. "One often stumbles on such events so being ever aware and keeping an eye on what's going on can really pay dividends. "Of course we all look different in silhouette with just a handful of people looking great. Lewis is just such a person. Apart from Michael Schumacher no other driver is so distinctive when seen heavily backlit. "Selecting a medium telephoto lens I sat low so as to frame Hamilton against the evening sun underexposing the picture to produce dramatic results. "You can imagine I'm sure that after just a few minutes of watching - through the viewfinder - and waiting for everything to come together one starts to have trouble actually seeing! "For the shot to work I needed Lewis to look and sit up so as to partially obscure the sun. The smile he cracked just as he did so providing the icing on the cake."
