Formula 1 big picture is a feature designed to showcase a side of the sport that is sometimes missed on television. As well as being dramatic and exciting, F1 is also a sport where beauty is visible at every turn. Whether it is the curves of the cars, the drama and personality provided by the drivers, or the attractiveness of the setting, F1 is one of the world's most photogenic sports. Over the last 20 years, Darren Heath has carved a reputation as one of F1's most original photographers. This is his story behind his image from the Chinese Grand Prix: "When news broke that the 2009 F1 world champion had signed a multi-year deal with McLaren, many within and without the sport questioned the sanity of Jenson's decision. "Surely Button was foolish to jump from the title-winning Brawn - now Mercedes - ship and go head-to-head with McLaren's favourite son Lewis Hamilton. "Well, the doubters needn't have worried. Four races in to the 2010 season, with two race wins and a championship lead, things couldn't look better for 'JB' right now. | ANDREW BENSON BLOG |
"Shooting the post-race celebrations is an important part of any F1 grand prix, with paramount importance being placed on portraying the emotion of the occasion as the winning driver greets his team. "The Shanghai circuit's high-in-the-sky media centre has at each corner a window-free smoking area, one of which looks directly over parc ferme, where the drivers park their cars after the race. "Choosing this lofty perch, I chose to shoot with a 600mm lens, the telephoto focal length not only concentrating attention on the man of the moment but also affording the viewer a certain amount of intimacy with the subject as Button and his crew enjoy the moment. "The elated expression on the face of Button's gorgeous girlfriend, Jessica Michibata, captures the mood perfectly." Camera: Canon EOS1DS Mark 3; Lens: 600mm; Exposure: 320th sec @ f/4
