| |  Saturday, 10 March, 2001, 19:31 GMT Burrell strikes gold Burrell: swept past Tatyana Kotova of Russia US long jumper Dawn Burrell won the world indoor title on her last attempt, sweeping past defending champion Tatyana Kotova at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon on Saturday. In an extremely tight competition, Burrell finished with a season's best of 7.03 metres, finishing 5cms ahead of Kotova. Niurka Montalvo of Spain set a national record of 6.88 to finish third. German veteran and Olympic champion Heike Drechsler, 36, won the indoor title in 1987 and still holds the world record with 7.37. She finished fifth on Saturday, behind Fiona May of Italy.
US champion Lawrence Johnson won the pole vault gold ahead of compatriot Tye Harvey with Romain Mesnil of France taking bronze. Lawrence, who already had the season's top height, won with 5.95 meters, ahead of Tye's 5.90. Mesnil had 5.85. In the 3000m, Russian Olga Yegorova stunned Olympic champion Gabriela Szabo to win the women's title in a time of eight minutes 37.48 seconds. The 28-year-old Russian, who surged past Szabo with a lap to go, beat home the Romanian, a three-time world indoor champion at this event, who finished in 8:39.65, and another Russian, Yelena Zadorozhnaya, took the bronze in a time of 8:40.15 Rui Silva delighted the home crowd by winning the 1,500m, coming from behind to beat Spain's Reyes Esteves - Olympic champion Noah Ngeny of Kenya took the bronze.
Silva finished the tactical race in 3 minutes 51.06 seconds, holding an edge of 0.018 over the Spaniard. In other finals, American sprinter Shawn Crawford won the 200 meters in 20.64 ahead of Britain's Christian Malcolm and Dutch runner Patrick van Balkom. Jamaica's Juliet Campbell triumphed in the women's 200 in 22.65 ahead of LaTasha Jenkins of the United States. Russia's Larissa Peleshenko won the women's shot with a heave of 19.84 meters, well ahead of second place Nadezhda Ostapchuk of Belarus, who finished with 19.24. Defending champion Svetlana Krivelyova, also of Russia, had 19.18. | |
