| Silver success for Malcolm Christian Malcolm: A proven world-class sprinter Welshman Christian Malcolm had to settle for a silver medal in the final of the men's 200 metres at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon on Saturday. American rival Shawn Crawford clocked 20.63 seconds, relegating Malcolm, a former world junior champion, to second place in 20.76. After the late withdrawal of Kevin Little with a hamstring injury, Malcolm was the pre-race favourite to clinch gold. But Crawford was quickest out of the blocks and Malcolm seemed to tighten-up around the final bend as the American started to pull-away. Patrick van Balkom of the Netherlands took the bronze medal in 20.96secs. Britain's second finalist Allyn Condon, drawn in the unhelpful inside lane, was fifth and last in 21.69secs. |
