Godina bags gold
Terrence Trammell
Terrence Trammell continued his impressive season
John Godina edged out his US rival Adam Nelson and Spain's Manuel Martinez to take the gold in the shot put at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Lisbon.

Godina threw 20.82 meters on his sixth and last attempt to snatch the top prize in a thrilling contest.

The winner adds the gold to the silver he won two years ago in Maebashi, Japan.

There was more success for America in the 60m hurdles where Terrence Trammell turned his dominant form this season into beating Cuba's Anier Garcia into second place and South African Shaun Bownes into third.

Trammell finished just .03 seconds ahead of the Cuban who is the reigning Olympic champion at 110m.

US champion Trammell clocked the season's top three times coming into the championships.

More American success

The hurdles turned out to be a lucky event for the American team, with Anjanette Kirkland winning the women's event.

Kirkland finished ahead of Jamaica's Michelle Freeman and France's Nicole Ramalalanirina.

Kirkland finished in a personal best of 7.85 seconds, holding an edge of .07 over Freeman. Ramalalanirina clocked 7.96.

Defending champion Olga Shishigina, of Kazakstan, finished fourth, also in 7.96.

Disappointing contest

Sweden's Kajsa Bergqvist took the high jump gold, beating Inga Babakova, of Ukraine, into second place and Venelina Veneva, of Bulgaria, who took the bronze.

In a disappointing contest, only Bergqvist and Babakova cleared 2.00m, but the Swede did so at her first attempt while Babakova needed three.

The two both missed three attempts at 2.02.

In the first event of the evening session, Czech Republic's Pavla Hamackova won the pole vault title with a championship record of 4.56 metres as Olympic champion Stacey Dragila finished out of the medals in fourth.

Hamackova, adding this title to the European indoors from last year, beat Russian Svetlana Feofanova who posted a mark of 4.51 while American Kellie Suttle was third also on 4.51.
