| Final round Tiger watch Woods stretches at the par four fourth All the hole-by-hole action as Tiger Woods fails to hold onto his US Open title. Woods takes a driver at the first time at the hole all week and sees his ball drift into the rough. His second shot with a wedge flies over the trees protecting the green and nestles just off the green. His chip from some 15 yards stops just a foot from the hole, allowing him to tap in for a par at a hole which has troubled him all week. Four-over par. Woods launches another huge drive which finds the rough behind a tree on the right side of this long par four. His next shot, a low cutting seven iron, catches a tree and goes just a few yards forward The third shot is a pitch which just creeps onto the green, leaving him a tricky par putt from some 40 feet. Woods makes a bold attempt, but comes up six inches short and has to settle for a bogey. Five-over par.
His downhill putt move to the right of the hole, leaving him a 18 inch par putt. Five-over par. Woods hits a long drive, leaving him a second of 134 yards which he knocks to just seven feet from the flag, giving him his first realistic birdie chance. He knocks the birdie putt in with little difficulty to get back to level par for the day. Four-over par. On this, the 640 yard par five, Woods unleashes a drive of over 350 yards to give himself a chance of reaching the green in two. Perhaps even more incredible is his second shot which bounces onto the green, giving him an outside chance of an eagle. His uphill putt from some 15 yards comes up some five feet short, but he makes his birdie without any fuss. Three-over par. On this par three, Woods flies his nine-iron straight at the flag, but pays the price for lack of club by finding the bunker before the pin. From a good lie in the sand, the defending champion puts his second to a foot from the hole for an easy par putt. Three-over par. A 230 yard iron shot from the tee leaves him a shot of just 150 yards to the pin. Woods takes a nine-iron and knocks it six feet past the flag. His putt never leaves the centre of the hole, making it three birdies in four holes. Two-over par. With a three-iron on this long par three, Woods hesitates before his tee shot. The ball lands softly on the right side of the green, leaving him a long birdie putt. From 50 feet, Woods totally misjudges his putt, leaving him a ten footer for par. A tricky downhill putt, Woods continues his impressive run to stay seven shots back. Two-over par. After a perfect tee shot to the centre of the green, Woods hits a disastrous second. The approach lands on the front of the green but spins down the slope and leaves him forty yards from the flag. His third goes some seven feet past the pin, but his par putt fails to turn enough. Three-over par. After another drive to the centre of the fairway, Woods is left with an ideal distance to the green. His approach drifts slightly to the left of the flag, but he still has an uphill putt for his birdie. He gets the speed right but not the direction and has to settle for a par. Three-over par. At this par three, he lands his tee shot over the flag and gets enough to keep the ball on the green, 11 feet away from the pin. His downhill putt turns in just enough to give him his fourth birdie of the day. Two-over par. Refusing to accept that he is out of the tournament, the 25-year-old plays two perfect shots. His drive of 300 yards leaves him a nine-iron to the flag which is at the front of the green. Woods flies the ball right at the hole again, leaving him a six footer for a consecutive birdie. But he fails to take advantage and remains seven behind Two-over par. Woods fails to make in-roads on this par five, needing three shots to make it to the green. His third is an unimpressive shot by his standards, landing at the back of the green from just 95 yards, giving him an outside chance of a birdie. His putt fails to come back enough but he makes par simply enough.
Two-over par. Woods hits a perfect drive to the centre of the fairway. But he attempts to punch his approach in and lands it on the fringe behind the green. His chip back drifts seven feet past the hole, leaving a tricky par putt which he makes. Two-over par. At this monster par four, he once again needs to hole a tricky seven footer for his par, which he does. Two-over par. The end is nigh for Woods after he bogeys this straightforward par four. Off the green after his second, he plays a superb chip to leave him a three foot par putt. But he tweaks it to the right and he now knows that any chance of regaining his title is over. Three-over par. After a drive into the right side of the fairway, he hits a stunning second shot which lands on the front of the green. As great as the shot is, it means that he cannot catch Tom Kite, the clubhouse leader and thus signals the end of his title defence. As hard as he tries, he cannot make a birdie here and holes out for a par which gives him a final round 69. Final score - three-over par. |
