| Second round Tiger watch Woods has struggled to find his best form so far All the action hole-by-hole from Tiger Woods' second round at the Southern Hills course in Oklahoma. The world number one, who completed his rain-interrupted opening round earlier on Friday, begins his second round way off the pace at four over par. But Woods starts his second round in the same vein he finished the first. A wayward tee shot means he is happy to hole from three feet for a par four.
Woods opts for a driver off the tee, but finds the rough on the right-hand side of the hole. His options for the second shot are limited, with his ball nestled among the trees - and he is only able to nudge a low shot 30 feet short of the green. A steady chip takes him to within nine feet of the pin and he holes the putt for another par. Woods finds the centre of the fairway with his tee shot. He then sends an eight-iron onto the green, but is unable to get the ball close to the pin. In the first round he three-putted this hole for a bogey five - but this time a fine approach putt means he improves on that effort with a four. Woods' first shot finds the light rough on the right-hand side of the hole. He tries to reach the green over a bunker, but the ball falls short and ends up in the sand trap - and the lie is not good. Woods connects with his sand wedge, but the ball barely finds its way out of the bunker and gets stuck in the rough on the fringe of the green. A chip and putt means the first dropped shot of the round, as he slips further back into the pack.
Another loose drive leaves his ball in the rough - and means he is unable to reach the green in two on this long par five. A steady second and unspectacular approach means he is on the putting surface in three. But he misses his second putt from six feet and drops another shot. The 163-yard par three gives Woods his first birdie chance of the second round. An eight iron finds the back of the green, but his 15-foot putt slips by the hole. After two bogeys he manages to stop the rot with a par - but the odds-on favourite is still languishing in joint 100th spot. Woods reaches the green in regulation - but his putter is just not working its usual magic and a 10-foot birdie putt drifts away. Six over par A five iron at this 215-yard par three goes bounding past the hole, which is cut into the front of the green. Two putts bring him another par, with still no sight of a birdie. Six over par
Signs, at last, that Woods' swing may be back in the groove. He plays the perfect tee shot on this short par four - but then an under-hit wedge is left 30 feet from the pin and he two-putts for par. Woods is out in 37, two over par. He is 10 shots off the lead and facing the distinct possibility of missing the cut. Woods finds the centre of the fairway off the tee - but his second shot is a poor one. The ball skips through the green and into a bunker at the back. But his recovery play stands up to the test and he hits a sublime sand shot to two feet for par. Another loose short iron - this time off the tee at this 180-yard par three - sends the ball off the back of the green. Facing a testing lie, Woods does well to chip back to five feet past the hole. He shows his nerve to sink the putt for a three. Finally Woods picks up a shot. A fine combination of strokes - a regulation drive followed by an iron into the heart of the green - create an opening on this most testing of par fours. Woods' 20-foot putt never looks like missing - and when it sinks his huge band of followers at last have something to cheer about. It is only his second birdie of the championship.
The huge hitting Woods would normally aim to reach the green in two on this par five. But with his game still way short of its best and water protecting the green, he is forced to lay up with his second shot. But the plan works, as a pitch and 15-foot putt bring Woods his second consecutive birdie. After two excellent putts, Woods fancies his chances of a third straight birdie on this 215-yard par three. But after an encouraging tee shot, his approach putt is just short and he has to settle for par. Four over par A two iron off the tee takes Woods to within range of the green - and a sweetly-hit seven iron brings another birdie chance. But his curving 20-foot putt is off target and he cards a four. Four over par
When his tee shot finds the light rough on the right, Woods is still 200 yards away and unable to reach the green with his second. He chips onto the putting surface with his third, but the ball rolls around 15 feet away from the hole. The par saving putt proves beyond him and he drops back again. Five over par Time is running out for Woods to secure his place in the final two rounds. But after a promising tee shot, he makes a hash of his approach - his failing throughout the round - and the ball runs through the back of the green. He now faces a battle just to save par. With the ball in the rough behind the green, he opts for a lofted club. An excellent shot sends the ball to six feet - and he sinks the putt for a par that brings a huge sigh of relief. Woods plays the toughest hole on the course knowing a birdie will surely secure his participation for the weekend. A fine drive down the middle of the fairway leaves him well set for the task ahead. Woods is still some 220 yards from the flag - but he unleashes a magnificent four iron which finds the back of the green before spinning back to 15 feet from the hole. But he fails with the birdie putt and finishes with a one-over 71. The greatest player in the world and defending champion is now left sweating on whether he has made the cut. |
