Colin Montgomerie has declared himself fit to play in the US Open, after making a recovery from his back injury.

The Scot had been doubtful for the season's second Major, after pulling out of the English Open last week.

But Montgomerie was flying out to Tulsa on Monday after passing a fitness test on his back.

"Colin has woken up absolutely fine," said his manager Guy Kinnings.

"He is happy with the way everything has gone - treatment, rest and practice.

"He'll by flying out this morning, looking forward very much to playing."

Montgomerie started a course of treatment on his problem back immediately after walking off the course on Friday midway through his second round in the English Open.

The 37-year-old Scot had never previously pulled out of a tournament because of injury.

"I tried, but I just couldn't play golf the way I can," the world number nine said at the time

"I'm a little bit worried because I've never really had an injury like this before."

But after a practice session on Sunday his manager confirmed Montgomerie would make the US Open.

"He went out to hit some balls this afternoon," said Kinnings. "Assuming he suffered no setback to that, it looks 99% certain he'll be on the flight."

The 101st US Open begins on Thursday at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa.

Montgomerie has twice finished runner-up at the championship, the closest he has come to winning a Major.
