| Dravid defies South Africa Boucher appeals in vain for Dravid's wicket Second Test, Port Elizabeth, day five (final session): South Africa 362 & 233-5 dec drew with India 201 & 206-3. Rahul Dravid hit a superb 87 for India as he and makeshift opener Deep Dasgupta ensured the tourists did enough to get a draw in the Port Elizabeth Test. The pair added 171 for the second wicket, and although South Africa finally removed both men, they had by then used up most of the day and Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly batted out the remaining handful of overs. Most encouragingly for the tourists, they appear to have found a solution at the top of the order, as Dasgupta hit a painstaking 63 - his first Test 50 in his second start at this level. While events off the pitch dominated proceedings, with a clutch of India's players censured for their actions earlier in the match, their batsmen had a job to do. Shaun Pollock began the day with a long spell in tandem with his off-spinner, Nicky Boje.
Boje had a couple of half shouts for lbw, but on the whole South Africa rarely came close to getting the breakthrough. Dravid, after suffering when forced to open in the first Test at Bloemfontein, has found form at a welcome time with just one Test left here before the home series against England starting on 3 December. But with tea approaching and a modicum of swing coming the bowlers' way, Nantie Hayward finally persuaded Dravid to edge a loose shot behind. Tea was taken early after a brief torrential downpour, and after the interval Dasgupta's long vigil finally came to an end. The wicketkeeper opened the face of his bat to a Hayward leg-cutter and Kallis took the catch in the slips. Tendulkar and Ganguly had little to do in the remaining overs. But there was time for Tendulkar to receive a barrage of abuse from Hayward on a day when things said and done off the pitch had led to six Indians being reprimanded and sanctioned. However, the conduct of the South Africans has, it seems, not been called into question - much to the fury of the tourists. |
