South Africa were nine wickets away from wrapping up a series-clinching victory over India after declaring on a rain affected fourth day in Port Elizabeth. At the close of play, which came 23 overs early due to bad light, India were 28 for one in their second innings in search of an unlikely victory target of 395. Just 25 overs of play were possible in the day and further showers are expected on Tuesday, raising Indian hopes of a draw. Wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta, opening the batting for the second time, survived 64 deliveries to be 22 not out at stumps. With him was Rahul Dravid, unbeaten on three. Opener Shiv Sunder Das was the man out, edging at a Shaun Pollock away-swinger to wicket-keeper Mark Boucher off just the fifth ball of the innings. Declaration Rain allowed just seven overs of play in the first two sessions. South Africa added 22 to their overnight score with Pollock advancing to 55 not out and Jacques Kallis unbeaten on 89 in a sixth wicket stand of 94. The South African captain called a halt to the home side's second innings at the tea interval.
India made 406 for four at Port of Spain to beat West Indies on their 1975-76 tour, with England scoring 404 for three to defeat Australia at Leeds in 1948. An interesting face in the St Georges Park crowd was that of bookmaker Marlon Aronstan, who was implicated in the match-fixing alleagations made against former South African captain Hansie Cronje. |
