| Denness would do it again Mike Denness is to return to England after a tough week Under-fire match referee Mike Denness said on Friday he would officiate between South Africa and India again if asked, and if the International Cricket Council approved. "I would do it again if they agreed to it and my diary is free," the former England captain said.
Denness has become infamous after his handing out of fines and bans to six Indian cricketers, including star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, turned him into a hate figure. He was due to leave South Africa on Friday night after being replaced by Denis Lindsay for the final match between the sides. "I was hoping to go to Twickenham to watch the rugby between England and the Springboks, but my wife called and said there is a paintbrush waiting for me at home," said Denness. "When I get back I imagine I'll be meeting with the ICC and having a discussion about what's happened.
"This hasn't diminished my desire to be a match referee but I'm put forward by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and they have to nominate me to the ICC. "I do the job to the best of my ability and will continue to do so in the future." Denness will have to fight to keep his position as the ICC plan to institute a new elite panel of just five Test match referees by next April. Sanctions for officials The game's governing body refused to sanction the third Test between the two teams, which began at Centurion Park on Friday. English umpire George Sharp was withdrawn from the match and an all-South African team of Rudi Koertzen, David Orchard and Brian Jerling took charge.
"It's fair to say the ICC isn't happy that their officials are involved in the match,'' said spokesman Andrew Baud. "We recognize that it's a difficult time for the individuals involved and it will be a matter for discussion in the next few weeks." Tendulkar was given a suspended one-match ban and fined while Denness also sanctioned five other Indian players, including captain Saurav Ganguly, for excessive appealing. |
