Jacques Kallis made a typically gritty 84 not out as South Africa extended their lead over India in the second Test.

Kallis and captain Shaun Pollock had put on an unbroken 72 for the sixth wicket when bad light brought an eventful third day to a close 14 overs early.

Kallis had faced 201 deliveries, striking just six fours and a hooked six off Agit Agarkar.

But he had a narrow escape on 51 when he was dropped by VVS Laxman at second slip off Agarkar.

Pollock was 38 not out from 66 balls at stumps.

After bowling the tourists out for 201 in less than eight overs of the morning session, South Africa suffered the loss of three wickets within the first 13 overs.

Dubious decisions

Two further wickets fell in the afternoon session - both caught by Virender Sehwag under the helmet off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh and both dubious calls.

Neither Boeta Dippenaar, who made 28 in an hour and a half, nor Lance Klusener, whose 29 included two clubbed sixes in a single over off Harbhajan, looked happy as they headed back to the pavilion.

And television replays appeared to support their belief that both balls bounced off pad and not bat, a belief not shared by South African umpire Ian Howell.

For Dippenaar the dismissal could herald a break from Test cricket, with youngster Jacques Rudolph expected to take his place for the third match of the series.

Seamers strike

Beginning their second knock 161 runs ahead, South Africa had seen Gary Kirsten play and miss at Javagal Srinath several times before edging to Laxman in the slips.

First innings centurion Herschelle Gibbs was then bowled through the gate by an off-cutter from Agarkar - recalled to the side after missing the first Test.

And just four more runs were added from the next 27 deliveries before Neil McKenzie edged Srinath to wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta for two.
