Galileo storms to victory
Galileo romps to a fast victory at Epsom Downs
Galileo romps to a fast victory at Epsom Downs

Galileo, with Mick Kinane in the saddle, streaked home to win the 222nd running of the Epsom Derby by three and a half lengths.

The 11-4 joint favourite saw off the challenge of Pat Eddery and Golan, with Tobougg (9-1) and Frankie Dettori a neck back in third.

A fast race saw Mr Combustible make the running for most of the way, accompanied by another Barry Hills-trained runner, Perfect Sunday.

But Kinane, bidding for his second Derby triumph, kept Galileo well placed and made his move two and a half furlongs out.

    Lucky omen

Afterwards, the elated Irishman declared Galileo was "the best Derby horse I've ever ridden - he's got exceptional pace.

"I had a lucky omen as I was drawn 10 both days. I was surprised we were going as slow as we did, but when I kicked that was it."

It was Galileo's fourth win in four starts.

  • It's great for a horse when they start to show their full potential. Galileo is unbelievably natural
    Winning Derby trainer Aidan O'Brien
The win by the Irish horse was one of the most impressive victories in recent memory.

It completed an Oaks-Derby double for trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Kinane who triumphed 24 hours earlier with the filly Imagine.

O'Brien said: "It's great for a horse when they start to show their full potential. Galileo is unbelievably natural."

The provisional winning time of two mins 33.27 secs was one of the fastest on record.

And it provided champion sire Sadler's Wells with his first Derby winner.

A stewards' inquiry was announced but the winner was not affected.

Officials were looking into possible interference between Golan and Perfect Sunday, and Tobougg and Storming Home.

Following the inquiry, the placings remained unaltered.
