The win by the Irish horse was one of the most impressive victories in recent memory.

It completed an Oaks-Derby double for trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Kinane who triumphed 24 hours earlier with the filly Imagine.

O'Brien said: "It's great for a horse when they start to show their full potential. Galileo is unbelievably natural."

The provisional winning time of two mins 33.27 secs was one of the fastest on record.

And it provided champion sire Sadler's Wells with his first Derby winner.

A stewards' inquiry was announced but the winner was not affected.

Officials were looking into possible interference between Golan and Perfect Sunday, and Tobougg and Storming Home.

Following the inquiry, the placings remained unaltered.
