The BBC's Epsom team
BBC Sport have assembled a top quality field of their own to bring you the best coverage of the 2001 Epsom Derby and Oaks on television, radio and online from 8-9 June.

BBC Television's winning combination of Sue Barker and Clare Balding will be at Epsom to present all the big race action and they are joined by four-time Epsom Derby winner Willie Carson.

After almost eight years with the BBC, Clare Balding is widely acknowledged as being one of BBC Sport's leading broadcasters.

A leading amateur flat jockey in 1989 and 1990, and Champion Lady Rider in 1990, her speciality, unsurprisingly, is horse racing.

Daughter of trainer Ian Balding with uncles Toby and William also renowned trainers, Clare's presentation has been at the heart of the BBC's enhanced racing coverage for the past three years.

Her move into television began in the summer of 1994 as she made her debut during Royal Ascot.

It followed a recommendation from Julian Wilson, the man she would eventually take over from as horse racing presenter in December 1997.

Formerly Britain's number one tennis player and world number three, Barker started work as a sports broadcaster with Australia's Channel 7 in 1985.

She made her BBC TV Sport debut co-presenting the evening programme from Wimbledon '93 with Harry Carpenter.

Carson's obsession with horse racing led to an illustrious jockey career, spanning for more than 30 years before retirement in 1996.

He was crowned champion jockey on five occasions, awarded an OBE in 1983 and rode a total of 3,828 winners in Britain putting him fourth in the all-time list of jockeys.

His last success in the Epsom Derby was on Erhaab in 1994 and followed victories on Nashwan (89), Henbit (80) and Troy (79).

Having retired from racing, Carson took up a post at the BBC, commentating on television and BBC Five Live as well as working as a racing pundit.

Jim McGrath leads the television commentary team with Graham Rock and Jimmy Lindley in the paddock providing expert commentary on the runners and riders form.

Richard Pitman will report from around the course and the start with Jonathan Powell unearthing any news stories on both days.

Betting guru Angus Loughran will provide all the latest on the tips, prices and movers from the ever-changing betting market.

This year's Five Live commentary on the race is set to be the last for Peter Bromley.

He commentated on his first Derby for the BBC in 1961 and has commentated on nearly 2000 Classic races.

After leaving the army, Peter began his career in racing as an assistant to trainer Frank Pullen and occasional amateur jockey - although this was curtailed by injury.

He turned to racecourse commentary and his first BBC Radio commentary was at Newmarket in 1959.

He soon became the BBC's Racing Correspondent - the first sports correspondent ever appointed by the BBC.

Walter Swinburn joins the BBC Radio Five Live team as a summariser.

This year's race marks the 20th anniversary of Swinburn's victory on Shergar in 1981.

And he enjoyed further Epsom glory on Shahrastani in 1986 and Lammtarra in 1995.

Cornelius Lysaght goes behind the scenes to talk to the trainers, the jockeys, the winners and losers.

Lee McKenzie also commentates, and Charlie Brooks is at the stalls to hear the discussions between jockeys before the start.

BBC Sport Online will have our horseracing expert Honest Frank Keogh at Epsom filing a host of features to complete the Derby picture.
