Waqar praises team effort
Pakistan team
Pakistan never lost their belief in each other
Pakistan captain Waqar Younis hailed his team's collective effort to take eight wickets in the final session to win the second Test.

All hope of forcing a result seemed lost as England went to tea on 196 for two but Pakistan's bowlers ripped out the remaining batsmen for just 65 runs to claim a dramatic victory.

Waqar, captaining Pakistan for just the third time, said he always felt his side was capable of retrieving the situation.

"Pakistan has a habit of coming back in the last session and Wasim and Saqlain bowled really well and everyone did their bit.

"They came back and fielded well, everything was perfect.

Saqlain Mushtaq
Saqlain finished with four second innings wickets
"We had a bad year to year-and-a-half and this victory really pumps us up for the one-day series - this is very good for the team."

The captain's contribution to the win was crucial said Wasim Akram, not only the three wickets he took with his bowling.

"Credit must go to the whole team and the captain and the coach who believed in us a we all backed him up," said Wasim.

"He had confidence in us and we had confidence in the captain."

Collapse woes

It was, he said, a fitting finale to his final Test in England.

"It was absolutely perfect to win in such style - it was one of the best wins I've ever experienced with Pakistan in the last 10 years."

Saqlain Mushtaq, who finished with four for 74, said the team always felt they were in with a chance in the match.

"We always come back and produce a very good perfomance after defeat and we came together as a unit."

England captain Alec Stewart said the two collapses in the match were of concern.

"It was disappointing to lose batches of wickets. We lost eight for 80 in the first innings and eight for 65 in the second and that's disapponting.

I'm disappointed yes, but it was not a disgrace
Alec Stewart
"And Inzy was probably the difference between to the two sides.

"We had him caught off a no ball in the first innings and then dropped in the second innings and he played exceptionally well and took the game away from us."

But Stewart refused to be too dispirited by the defeat.

"I think that's the fifth series that we are unbeaten, so I'm disappointed yes, but it was not a disgrace."

Stewart said the team would take lessons from the Old Trafford defeat and the Lord's win into the matches against Australia and the NatWest one-day series.
