| England make fine start to run chase ![]() Michael Atherton evades a short delivery at Old Trafford Second Test, Old Trafford: England 357 & 85 without loss Pakistan 403 & 323 (day four) Click here Michael Atherton and Marcus Trescothick safely guided England along to 85 without loss at the close of the fourth day's play at Old Trafford - 285 short of victory. In pursuit of the formidable target of 370, a figure only eclipsed twice before in Test history, both openers hit consecutive boundaries in the first two overs of the innings. And though Trescothick did not initially look quite so comfortable against the spin of Saqlain Mushtaq he soon grew in confidence. Trescothick ended the day on 48 not out, with Atherton unbeaten on 30. And the game remains beautifully balanced with both sides having realistic hopes of victory on what promises to be a dramatic final day. England were left the stiff run chase after Pakistan were bowled out for 323 in their second innings.
England finally ended the Pakistan second innings when Saqlain Mushtaq topped a Darren Gough bouncer to Alec Stewart, leaving Waqar Younis undefeated on 14. Pakistan, resuming the day on 87 for three, had few problems in the morning session - although Nick Knight dropped Inzamam-ul-Haq when on 36. First innings centurion Inzamam made Knight pay by top scoring with 85 before being caught by Trescothick off Matthew Hoggard. Yousuf Youhana (49) soon followed - although he was unlucky as replays showed that a ball from Andrew Caddick deflected off the peak of his helmet before being taken by Atherton at first slip.
And when Caddick bowled Azhar Mahmood for 14 England's victory hopes were raised. But Wasim Akram and Rashid Latif then pushed the tourists' total along. Wasim received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd on his 35th birthday as the former Lancashie idol left the field after being bowled by Darren Gough for a quick-fire 36. Akram's dismissal followed soon after Rashid Latif had fallen, the wicketkeeper caught by Atherton at first slip off Hoggard for 25. Pakistan need to win to square the two-match series. |
